How to Find the Qibla
All five reliable methods in one place: phone GPS, a physical compass, the sun, and aligning with a trusted mosque.
-
Compass Not Working?
Fix the common problems: blocked location permission, iPhone motion access, uncalibrated sensors and browsers that refuse heading data.
Quick Fixes for Common Problems
- Location permission denied? Use the city picker or type your coordinates manually — no GPS needed.
- Dial not rotating as you turn? Your device may not share heading data. Use the numerical bearing with any physical compass instead.
- Readings look wrong on iPhone? Grant Motion & Orientation access when asked. On Android, wave the phone in a figure-of-eight to calibrate.
- Comparing with a magnetic compass? Our bearing is from true north. In the UK, magnetic north sits about 1–2° west of true north.
Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers — including what the tool can and cannot do.
How accurate is the Qibla direction shown?
The bearing is computed with the great-circle formula to the Kaaba and displayed to one decimal place — the maths itself is exact. Your overall accuracy depends on your position: phone GPS is typically within 5–20 metres outdoors, which is more than enough for prayer direction.
Why does the site ask for my location?
Your coordinates are the starting point of the calculation. Location is requested only when you tap Use my location, it is used only inside your browser, and it is never sent to our server.
Does the compass dial rotate live as I turn my phone?
Only when your device provides a trustworthy heading — and on iPhone, only after you grant motion permission. Otherwise the dial stays as a north-up illustration of your bearing, and we say so on screen. We never animate a direction we cannot verify.
Can I find the Qibla without GPS?
Yes. Choose your city from the picker or enter latitude and longitude by hand. Both give the same calculated bearing as GPS.
Is the bearing based on true north or magnetic north?
True north — the geographic North Pole. Phone compasses and magnetic compasses point to magnetic north, which drifts; in the UK the difference is currently about 1–2°. See our UK guide for the practical effect.
Is FindMyQibla free?
